| Thank you for helping those of us who are considering a move to Panama. I am a retired single woman who has lived in several foreign countries. Unhappy with our present US politics I wish to move to a friendlier soil.
I love the mountains yet wanting the best of both worlds would like to live in the mountains or hills with a view of the ocean. Extreme heat and humidity are not to my liking. Realizing that IL is promoting certain areas I am certain that there are other places that are just a lovely without the inflated prices. My Spanish is fairly fluent so living in an all, or, almost all expat community would not be a preference. My preference would be a community that has a good mix where I could buy a house or land at a reasonable price and where I do not have to buy a lot that is so small that I can listen to my neighbors boom box.
How important is a gated community? Could I safely buy land or a house apart from a developed community?
Any help that you could give me would certainly be appreciated.
Thank you,

There are many places here in PANAMA that meet your criteria. We live in an area that we see the ocean and still considered the mountains. We are in a development, but we are the only full time residents with a Panamanian weekend house here also.
There are communities like El Valle in the mountains, but no view of the ocean. There is the development called Altos del Maria--there is nothing within 1/2 hour drive except homes. There are roads outside of Coronado that go into the mountains have a few developments and single lots that are available for sell with view of the ocean.
There is also the areas up near the Costa Rica border (David, Boquette, and Volcan), but I am not familiar with those areas.
There is also developments going on in Campira, Campanea, and Capira which are in the mountains and 1 hour from Panama City.
I hope this gives you a starting point. Look on Encuenta24 for real estate in Panama and PanamaRealtor. Both have a wide range of property and houses for sale in PANAMA.
Due your due diligence and don't do anything without a good lawyer down here.

cleome- | 2009-09-02 10:18:10 | Mary, thank you so much for all of this information. You mentioned that you lived in an area where you see the ocean yet you still live in the mountains. Would you be kind enough to give me the name of that area? I had looked into Altos de Maria but would not consider it because their water is both chlorinated and contains fluoride. It is possible that all of these sub divisions do likewise but I have not yet inquired elsewhere. Would you happen to know if this is the case?
Boquete sounds lovely but appears to be mostly expats. Volcan is a place that I am looking into.
I had not heard of Campira, Campanea nor Capira so thank you for those names as well as the realtors all of which I plan to contact. How important is it to live within a gated community?
Thank you again for all of your suggestions.

Mary- | 2009-09-05 10:38:03 | Hi!
We live on the road to El Valle. There are a bunch of places along the road or even off the road. We have what is considered community water. We filter it and I have replaced the filter 1 time in 4 years for our drinking water. A lot of people drill their own wells also because community water is very irratic.
There is a road out of Coronado up into the mountains that runs parallel to the road to El Valle that has beautiful views of the ocean and you are considered in the mountains. We drove it again a month ago and there were developments also up that way.

Have a wonderful day and thank you again for your prompt reply.

Mary- | 2009-09-07 21:29:04 | Hi!
We are about 1-1/2 hours to Panama City. I usually go in once every month or two to get basics and make a full day of shopping and dinner.
My fresh fruits and veggies I get in El Valle. They also have a great bakery up there and it is about 20 minutes from our house. There are a lot of little grocery stores (7/11) around so I will get my milk and bread there.
I hope this answers your questions.

cleome- | 2009-09-08 06:30:37 | Hi Mary, more questions if I may. I am a vegetarian and the fruits and veggies that I eat are organic. What is the availability of organic produce? Are there open air markets where I can buy these products or am I going to be confined to the super mercados? On occasions I do eat poultry, are there such things as free range eggs and organic poultry? My last question is are there vitamin shops in the area that specialize in vitamins not shops that carry just a few varieties on their top shelves? Again I thank you for answering my many questions. Have a wonderful day.

Mary- | 2009-09-09 10:08:15 | Hi!
There are open air markets everywhere. I go up to El Valle to get my fresh fruits and veggies. I also get eggs up there. I know there are markets open all over the city that are open air. As for vitamins there are a couple of specialty stores in the city. I know of one that is in ElDorado near the DoItCenter.
